SIZE OF THE UNIVERSE
Magnifying the Universe - This is a very cool website that allows you, by use of a manual controlled moveable slide, to shrink and magnify the universe from particles smaller than an atom to greater than our Milky Way universe and back. It’s fun to play with. Amazing!
“The first planet discovered orbiting another star was in 1992. Today we know of 3500 other planets orbiting other stars.
It’s about 250 miles to the ISS
250,000 to the moon
700 million miles to Saturn
Over 9 trillion miles to the edge of the solar system
Our nearest star is 4 1/4 light yrs away, 17,000 yrs away
25,000 light yrs to the edge of the milky Ways
Our galaxy is just one of trillions” (From One Strange Rock)
Extraordinary Pictures of the Universe
The largest image of the universe (the Andromeda galaxy), captured by NASA and the Hubble Telescope, is a collection of 411 photos stitched together (1.5 billion pixels). Use NASA’s zooming tool to see it. (See Blog entry about this)
